Early History of Barnoldswick
Barnoldswick is a town situated on the Lancashire and Yorkshire border dating back to a settlement of the Anglo Saxon era , possibly around the 9 th or 10 th century. The name Barnoldswick being derived from " Bernulfeswic" or Bernulf’s settlement . It may be a possibility that Bernulf was Beornwulf , King of the Mercians.
A group of Cistercian monks from Fountains Abbey came to build a monastery in the town in 1147 , but history states that the local villagers and Monks did not get on together and eventually around 1152 the monks left the area and built Kirkstall Abbey instead .
The monks returned however to build the church of St. Mary-le-Gill between 1157 and 1160 .The reason that the church was built so far outside the settlement is a mystery , perhaps it was built to serve Barnoldswick , Marton and Thornton , another theory is that this is the true site of Mond Sanctae Mariae ( Mount Saint Mary’s Abbey ) .
The local name for Barnoldswick is "Barlick " and local people are called " Barlickers" . Hence the name for my Web site
Crow Foot Row . This is a very old part of the town .These cottages were built in 1824.They do not have a back door and the second floor in most of them was used as bedroom and for hand looms.
